The Smithsonian Institution’s traveling exhibit, William H. Johnson: An American Modern, features rare paintings by William H. Johnson, from the collection of the James E. Lewis Museum at Morgan State University and is a cornerstone of the Arlington Museum of Art’s Harlem Renaissance exhibit. An essential figure in modern American art, William H. Johnson (1901-1970) was a preeminent African-American artist and virtuoso skilled in various media and techniques, and produced thousands of works over a career that spanned decades, continents and genres.
You will be able to view this exhibit from June 1st through August 25th. A preview of the exhibition and opening reception for exhibit sponsors and museum members will be held on May 31, 2013 from 6 – 9 pm.
Works by additional important African-American artists will be included in the Harlem Renaissance exhibit. AMA is planning a number of programs in tandem with this exhibit that will enhance the visitors' experience including lectures, musical performances and poetry slams. More information on the exhibit and other events (such as lectures) will soon follow. Keep an eye on the museum’s website for more information.
